Medication Aide training by state

Apex Recruiting & Consulting runs Medication Aide classes taught by licensed nurses. A medication aide is a caregiver certified to give medications under a nurse's supervision. Our 68-hour Virginia program is approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing. Our New Jersey and South Carolina programs are in development and not enrolling yet.

Approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing, Program Approval No. 0030000391.

Choose your state

Which state are you training in?

Each state approves its own medication aide training and keeps its own registry, so a program is tied to the state that approved it.

Virginia

Virginia Medication Aide (Med Tech)

Now enrolling. A 68-hour program approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing, with live online classes and in-person clinical days in Richmond, Manassas, Portsmouth and Radford. $925, all-inclusive. The November cohort is full and the next cohort starts in December.

New Jersey

New Jersey Certified Medication Aide (CMA)

In development and not enrolling. RN-taught CMA training for New Jersey CNAs, home health aides and personal care assistants, plus the 10-hour recertification course CMAs need every 2 years.

South Carolina

South Carolina Medication Assistant

In development and not enrolling. South Carolina launched a statewide Medication Assistant certification in 2026. Read the new 100-hour requirements and join the interest list.

New to caregiving

New to caregiving? Start with Personal Care Aide training.

Virginia accepts a Personal Care Aide (PCA) certificate as the prerequisite for Medication Aide training. Our 40-hour PCA class is taught live online by a registered nurse. It gets you working in assisted living and home care, and puts you one step from the Medication Aide course.

Working in home care instead? Our 76-hour Home Health Aide class is open to students nationwide, live online with 2 in-person skills days in New Jersey.

How our classes work

How do Apex training programs work?

Our school, Apex Clinical Training Institute, is a division of Apex Recruiting & Consulting. One all-inclusive fee covers tuition, materials, clinical coordination, the certificate and the background check.

01

Licensed nurse instructors

Registered nurses and LPNs with years of assisted living and skilled nursing experience teach every class.

02

Live online classroom

Real-time sessions on Zoom, with day and evening cohorts so you can keep your shifts.

03

In-person clinical hours

Supervised practice at partner communities, with no more than 10 students per instructor.

04

Exam preparation built in

Every unit ends with exam-style practice, and the final week follows the state testing format.

For employers

Can a community train its own staff?

Yes. Senior living communities and skilled nursing facilities can reserve seats in an upcoming class, run a private class for their team, or host clinical hours in exchange for first access to our graduates.

Questions

Questions people ask

Call or text (929) 459-7160 if your question is not here.

What is the difference between a medication aide, a med tech and a medication assistant?

They describe the same kind of role, a caregiver trained and certified to give medications under a nurse's supervision, but each state uses its own title and rules. Virginia says Registered Medication Aide, New Jersey says Certified Medication Aide and South Carolina says Certified Medication Assistant. Employers often say med tech for all of them.

Does a certification from one state work in another?

Generally no. Each state approves its own training programs and runs its own registry. If you move, check the new state's rules before you rely on your existing credential.

Do I need to be a CNA first?

Virginia accepts CNA, PCA or Direct Care credentials. New Jersey requires an active New Jersey CNA, CHHA or PCA certification. South Carolina sets its own prerequisites. Each state page has the details.

Are the classes online?

The classroom hours are live online on Zoom. Clinical skills practice is always in person at a partner community.
