Become a Certified Home Health Aide in 76 hours

Apex's Home Health Aide class is open to students nationwide. It is 76 hours: 60 hours live online from wherever you are, then 16 hours of hands-on skills in person at our New Jersey skills site. It is taught live by a New Jersey-licensed registered nurse, to New Jersey's homemaker-home health aide curriculum. Tuition is $595, and state certification fees are paid separately. The next class runs November 9 to 20.

What you learn

What will you learn in the Home Health Aide class?

The course follows New Jersey's homemaker-home health aide curriculum.

  • Personal care, including bathing, grooming, dressing and toileting
  • Safe transfers, positioning, body mechanics and mobility
  • Vital signs, observation and reporting changes to the nurse
  • Infection control, handwashing and standard precautions
  • Nutrition, meal preparation and feeding assistance
  • Caring for clients with dementia, disabilities and chronic illness
  • Household management, home safety and emergencies
  • Client rights, communication, documentation and your role on the care team

Every technique is checked off by your RN before you graduate. Every class is taught live, never a recorded video.

New Jersey family caregivers

Can you get paid to care for a family member in New Jersey?

This applies in New Jersey only. Today, a New Jersey Medicaid member can hire a relative as a personal care assistant through the state's Personal Preference Program. No certification is required, and that is how most families get paid right now.

A second path is opening. In October 2025 the New Jersey Board of Nursing proposed rules that would let a family member become a certified home health aide for a relative on Medicaid or NJ FamilyCare, and work for that relative through a licensed private duty nursing agency, with the agency paying for certification. A bill in the Legislature would do the same and set a higher pay rate. Neither is final yet. Both require one thing of the family member, the CHHA certification. That is what this class prepares you for.

Not sure which path fits? Our sister company, Luman Group, publishes the Family Caregiver Hire-in-a-Box, a plain-language New Jersey kit with program guidance, forms, call scripts and payroll basics, plus a free 5-question options finder. Or ask us whether an agency may cover your tuition.

Where it leads

Where does Home Health Aide training take you?

A CHHA is a home health aide certified by the New Jersey Board of Nursing. Complete all 76 hours and your skills check-off, then send your certificate of completion with your CHHA application. State certification and fingerprint fees are paid to the state separately.

Questions

Questions people ask

Call or text (929) 459-7160 if your question is not here.

Do I need healthcare experience?

No. This course is built for people starting out in caregiving, and for family members who want to be certified to care for their own relative.

What does the $595 cover?

All 76 hours, 60 live online with your RN and 16 hands-on in person, your skills check-off and your certificate of completion. The New Jersey Board of Nursing's certification application and fingerprint background check are paid to the state separately.

Can I take this class if I live outside New Jersey?

Yes. Students from any state can enroll. The 60 classroom hours are live online from wherever you are, and the 16 hours of hands-on skills are in person at our New Jersey skills site, so plan for 2 days there. The 76-hour program is longer than the federal 75-hour home health aide training standard, which other states look at, but each state sets its own rules for home health aides. Ask us before you enroll and we will help you check yours.

Do I need the CHHA to get paid for caring for a family member?

Not today. Through New Jersey's Personal Preference Program, a Medicaid member can hire a relative as a personal care assistant without certification. The CHHA is needed when you are employed by a licensed home care or private duty nursing agency, including under the family caregiver pathway the state is finalizing.

I run an agency. Can I sponsor seats?

Yes. Agencies can reserve seats for aides they are hiring or family caregivers they will employ. Ask us about group pricing.

What if I miss a session?

All 76 hours are required for your certificate of completion, so plan to attend every session. If something comes up, contact us right away.
