Certified Medication Aide
Taught by an RN with a licensed pharmacist, with supervised medication passes at a partner assisted living community.
New Jersey, in development
A Certified Medication Aide (CMA) in New Jersey is a CNA, home health aide or personal care assistant certified to give medications in assisted living under a registered nurse's delegation. Apex is building an RN-taught CMA program and a 10-hour recertification course for New Jersey. The program is not yet approved and is not enrolling.
Apex already runs a Virginia Board of Nursing-approved Medication Aide program, No. 0030000391.
Requirements
New Jersey regulates medication aides under Title 8, Chapter 36 of the New Jersey Administrative Code.
Requirements are set by the New Jersey Department of Health and may change. Confirm current rules with NJDOH before you enroll in any program.
You need to be a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA), a Certified Homemaker-Home Health Aide (CHHA) or a Personal Care Assistant (PCA) in New Jersey.
The medication administration course must be approved by the New Jersey Department of Health. Approved courses are taught by a registered nurse working with a registered pharmacist and include supervised medication passes at a licensed assisted living community.
You take it within 6 months of finishing the course.
Certification is then valid for 2 years. To renew, a CMA completes at least 10 hours of continuing education during each 2-year period.
Where CMAs work
Certified Medication Aides give medications under a registered nurse's delegation in New Jersey assisted living residences, comprehensive personal care homes, assisted living programs and dementia care homes. Only a registered nurse may delegate medication administration. Licensed practical nurses cannot.
